How sustainable are aluminum cans?
Aluminum cans are one of the most sustainable ways to package a beverage — especially in Switzerland. Around 90% of cans are recycled, giving the material repeated life cycles. Their light weight also makes transport highly efficient: a 32-ton truck can carry 21,000 liters in cans, compared to 13,650 liters in one-way glass or 9,850 liters in returnable glass.
Even though primary aluminum requires energy to produce, its high recycling rate and transport efficiency give it a strong ecological profile, often outperforming heavier glass options.
